Description
Bursaphelenchus poligraphi is a microscopic nematode species belonging to the family Aphelenchoididae and the order Aphelenchida. This organism is recognized as a significant plant pest, primarily because of its symbiotic and phoretic association with bark beetles that attack coniferous trees.
The primary hosts for this nematode are various conifer species, with a notable preference for spruce trees. The nematode relies on the galleries excavated by its beetle vectors to penetrate the inner bark and sapwood of the host, where it thrives and reproduces.
The biology and life cycle of this nematode are heavily dependent on its beetle host. During the maturation phase, the nematodes move into the beetle's body. When the beetle attacks a new, healthy tree, the nematodes migrate out, infesting the new host. They possess a specialized dispersal stage (dauer larvae) that ensures survival during unfavorable conditions.
The damage caused by these nematodes involves the systematic destruction of wood tissue, particularly in the phloem and cambium layers. This activity disrupts nutrient transport, leading to tree decline, yellowing of needles, and structural weakening. The cumulative effect often results in the rapid death of the tree, especially when accompanied by fungal infections introduced by the beetles.
Control measures are centered on forest management and sanitation practices. Key strategies include the rapid removal and destruction of infested timber to disrupt the nematode's breeding cycle.
