The Saudi pine nematode (Bursaphelenchus saudi) is a microscopic phytoparasitic roundworm belonging to the order Aphelenchida and the family Aphelenchoididae. It is a highly specialized pathogen that primarily targets coniferous trees, often leading to rapid decline and mortality of susceptible host species.
The life cycle of Bursaphelenchus saudi is inherently linked to its insect vectors, specifically wood-boring beetles from the genus Monochamus. The nematodes enter the body of the beetle during its developmental stages, using the insect as a transport mechanism to reach healthy trees while the beetles feed on young shoots, thereby facilitating the inoculation of the tree with the pathogen.
This nematode exhibits a dimorphic feeding strategy: it can feed on fungi within the woody tissue or switch to a phytophagous stage where it consumes parenchyma cells. In the phytophagous phase, the population grows exponentially, colonizing the tree's resin canals and disrupting the flow of water and nutrients, which eventually leads to the wilting syndrome.
The damage caused by this nematode is severe and rapid. Initial symptoms include the cessation of resin flow, followed by the yellowing and wilting of the needles. As the infection progresses, the structural integrity of the xylem is compromised, causing the tree to dry out completely and making it susceptible to secondary infestations by bark beetles and wood-borers.
