Bursaphelenchus willibaldi is a microscopic nematode species belonging to the order Aphelenchida and the family Aphelenchoididae. It is recognized as a significant biological agent affecting coniferous trees, often occurring in complex associations with other wood-inhabiting nematodes within the forest ecosystem.
The primary host plants for this pest include species of the genus Pinus (pine). The nematode is primarily found residing within the resin canals and wood tissues of the host, where it engages in feeding on the epithelial cells and parenchyma, directly impacting the tree's vital functions.
The life cycle of B. willibaldi is strongly tied to insect vectors, particularly cerambycid beetles of the genus Monochamus. The dauer larvae of the nematode associate with the adult beetles, utilizing them as a means of transport. During the maturation feeding of the beetles on pine twigs, the nematodes successfully transfer into the host tree to initiate colonization and reproduction.
The severity of damage caused by this nematode is characterized by the inhibition of water transport, leading to a sudden decrease in transpiration. Symptoms include rapid yellowing and browning of needles, cessation of resin flow, and systemic wilting of the tree.
