Pine wood nematode

Bursaphelenchus xylophilus

Description

The pine wood nematode (Bursaphelenchus xylophilus) is a microscopic worm that causes the devastating pine wilt disease. taxonomically, it belongs to the order Aphelenchida and the family Aphelenchoididae. It is recognized as a primary quarantine pest worldwide due to its ability to decimate coniferous forests rapidly.

This nematode primarily infects trees within the genus Pinus. While various pine species are the main hosts, it can also affect spruce, larch, and fir. The susceptibility of these trees often depends on environmental factors, with high temperatures facilitating faster development of the nematode populations and intensifying the disease symptoms.

The life cycle of the nematode is uniquely linked to wood-boring beetles of the genus Monochamus, which act as vectors. The nematodes transfer from the beetle into the tree tissue during the insect's maturation feeding. Once inside the tree, they proliferate within the resin canals and parenchyma cells, causing severe physiological disruption.

The damage caused by these nematodes is systemic and lethal. By destroying the epithelial cells of the resin canals, the nematodes inhibit water transport, leading to a sudden stop in oleoresin production. This results in the rapid yellowing and death of the needles, and the tree typically succumbs to total wilting shortly after the initial infection.

Effective management requires an integrated approach to mitigate spread and mortality:

  • Implementation of strict phytosanitary regulations on timber movement.
  • Rapid detection and removal of infested, wilting trees.
  • Use of chemical control strategies to manage vector beetle populations.
  • Utilization of pheromone traps for early detection and monitoring.
  • Public awareness campaigns regarding the transport of firewood and logs.
