Bursaphelenchus yongensis

Bursaphelenchus yongensis

Description

Taxonomic position. Bursaphelenchus yongensis is a member of the phylum Nematoda, class Chromadorea, order Aphelenchida, and family Aphelenchoididae. As a microscopic plant-parasitic nematode, it is closely related to species known to cause significant economic losses in global forestry through the rapid wilt of pine trees.

Host plants. The primary hosts for this species are coniferous trees, specifically those belonging to the genus Pinus. The survival and spread of the nematode are heavily dependent on its association with wood-boring beetles, specifically cerambycids, which serve as the obligate biological vectors for the nematode's dispersal.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle is characterized by a dispersal stage (dauer larva) that migrates to the pupal chambers of host beetles. The nematodes accumulate within the tracheae of the insect. When the adult beetles emerge and feed on the shoots of healthy pines, the nematodes exit the beetle, penetrate the tree tissue through feeding wounds, and begin to reproduce rapidly, colonizing the resin canals.

Damage and economic impact. The infestation leads to the destruction of epithelial cells lining the resin canals, causing a cessation of resin flow and a rapid decline in the tree's health. Symptoms typically include the fading and browning of needles, wilting of the crown, and the death of the tree, often occurring within a single growing season. This nematode poses a significant threat to timber resources.

Control measures. Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for mitigating the impact of this nematode:

  • strict phytosanitary regulations regarding the transport of untreated conifer wood;
  • early detection and removal of infested trees to eliminate the source of infection;
  • heat treatment or fumigation of export logs to kill both nematodes and beetle vectors;
  • continuous monitoring of vector beetle populations to prevent mass outbreaks.
