The genus Cacopsylla, commonly known as psyllids or jumping plant lice, belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Psyllidae. These insects are notorious pests in orchards, particularly known for causing significant economic losses in pear production. Their ability to adapt to various environmental conditions makes them a persistent threat to fruit growers.
These insects primarily target Rosaceae family plants, with a strong preference for pear trees (Pyrus). By utilizing their piercing-sucking mouthparts, both nymphs and adults extract vital nutrients from the phloem of the host plant. This feeding activity leads to stunted growth, reduced vigor, and the potential spread of phytoplasmas.
The biological cycle of the psyllid is highly synchronized with the host plant's phenology. Adults typically overwinter in sheltered locations such as bark crevices. As temperatures rise in early spring, they emerge to lay eggs on developing buds. The nymphs undergo several instars, feeding extensively during the spring and summer seasons before maturing into adults.
The most distinctive sign of a psyllid infestation is the production of honeydew. This sticky substance covers leaves and fruits, serving as a medium for sooty mold growth, which inhibits photosynthesis. Severe infestations often result in leaf curling, premature leaf drop, stunted fruit development, and a significant decrease in the overall marketable yield.
Effective management and control strategies should be multifaceted:
