Citrus psyllid

Cacopsylla citrisuga

Description

The Citrus psyllid (scientific name Cacopsylla citrisuga) is a small insect belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Psyllidae. This pest is a known threat to various citrus crops, specializing in feeding on the sap of young, developing shoots and foliage of trees within the Rutaceae family.

The biological cycle of this species consists of an egg stage, several nymphal instars, and the adult stage. The psyllids show a high preference for succulent plant tissues, as these provide the necessary nutrients for larval development. Their life cycle is often closely tied to the flushing phases of the citrus trees, which they exploit for egg-laying.

Damage caused by Cacopsylla citrisuga includes distorted and curled leaves, stunted terminal growth, and overall tree stress. By extracting excessive amounts of phloem sap, the insects weaken the tree, leading to reduced vitality, diminished fruit set, and a compromised vascular system, which can have long-term consequences for orchard health.

Beyond direct feeding damage, the honeydew secreted by these psyllids creates a substrate for the growth of sooty mold. This layer blocks sunlight from reaching the leaves, further inhibiting photosynthesis and leaving the fruit coated in a dark, sticky residue that reduces its marketability and requires washing during post-harvest processing.

Effective management and control of citrus psyllid populations involve the following strategies:

  • Regular monitoring using yellow sticky traps and visual inspection of young growth.
  • Pruning techniques that minimize the duration of vegetative flushing.
  • Application of horticultural oils or soaps to reduce nymph populations.
  • Use of targeted insecticides during critical periods of pest emergence.
  • Conservation of natural predators such as ladybirds, lacewings, and parasitic wasps.
