Description

Cacopsylla liaoli is a specialized insect pest belonging to the family Psyllidae, within the order Hemiptera. In the context of pomology and agricultural production, it is recognized as a significant threat to pear cultivation, capable of causing localized but severe economic damage if not managed correctly.

The primary host for this pest is the pear tree. The insect targets the tender parts of the tree, including buds, emerging leaves, and young shoots. By piercing the plant tissues, the psyllid feeds on the phloem sap, which disrupts the normal development of the tree and diminishes its overall vitality.

The life cycle consists of egg, five nymphal instars, and the adult stage. Overwintering adults emerge in early spring to initiate the first generation. The rapid life cycle allows for multiple generations per year, leading to potential population explosions during the warmer summer months if environmental conditions are favorable.

The economic damage caused by this species is twofold: direct sap depletion and the secondary effects of infestation. As nymphs feed, they excrete large amounts of honeydew. This sticky substance coats the leaves and fruit, providing an ideal environment for sooty mold growth, which inhibits photosynthesis and renders the fruit unmarketable.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is the most reliable strategy against this pest. Key control measures include:

  • Dormant oil applications to reduce overwintering populations;
  • Use of systemic and contact insecticides during the early growing season;
