Cactus moth

Cactoblastis cactorum, commonly known as the cactus moth, is a species of moth in the family Pyralidae. Originally native to South America, it has gained global notoriety for its ability to devastate populations of Opuntia cacti, causing significant ecological and economic impact in regions where these plants are cultivated.

The primary host plants for this pest are cacti of the genus Opuntia. The larvae, which are gregarious, bore into the fleshy pads of the cactus. Their specialized feeding behavior allows them to consume the plant from the inside out, effectively hollowing out the segments while remaining protected from external predators and environmental stressors.

The life cycle of the cactus moth consists of four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females lay eggs in distinctive chains that mimic the spines of the host plant. Upon hatching, the larvae immediately tunnel into the host tissue. Throughout their development, they move between segments, leaving behind extensive galleries filled with frass, which often leads to total plant collapse.

The damage caused by this insect is severe and often fatal to the host plant. Beyond the direct consumption of internal tissues, the feeding tunnels create entry points for secondary bacterial and fungal infections. This combination of tissue loss and pathogen infiltration typically results in the rapid death of the cactus segment or the entire plant cluster within a short period.
