Description
The raisin moth (Cadra figulilella) is a member of the order Lepidoptera and the family Pyralidae. It is recognized as a significant pest that primarily impacts stored agricultural products, although it can also infest fruits directly in the field under favorable climatic conditions.
This pest targets a wide variety of commodities, including dried fruits like raisins, figs, and dates, as well as nuts and various cereal grains. Infestations in orchards often start on damaged, overripe, or bird-pecked fruit, which provides a convenient entrance point for the larvae to bore inside.
The life cycle of the raisin moth encompasses four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. In warehouse environments where temperatures remain moderate, the moth can complete multiple generations per year, leading to rapid population growth and widespread contamination of food supplies if left unchecked.
Damage is caused primarily by the larval stage, which feeds internally on the fruit. As they feed, larvae produce silken webbing, create tunnels, and contaminate the product with frass and cast skins. This makes the goods unmarketable and susceptible to further degradation through mold growth and moisture accumulation.
Management of the raisin moth requires an integrated approach. Effective strategies involve strict sanitation practices within storage facilities, such as removing debris and residual dust, maintaining low storage temperatures, and utilizing pheromone traps for early detection. Chemical control (fumigation) may be necessary in severe cases, strictly adhering to safety protocols for food storage.
