Description
Calacarus australis, commonly known as the tea rust mite, is a member of the Eriophyidae family. It is a significant pest of tea plants (Camellia sinensis) globally, particularly in warmer climates. As a microscopic pest, it often goes unnoticed until visible damage to the foliage becomes widespread across the plantation.
This mite specifically attacks the tender shoots and young leaves of the tea plant. By feeding on the epidermal cells, it causes direct damage to the parts of the plant most valuable for production. The persistent nature of this mite makes it a major concern for tea estate managers who must maintain high leaf quality for market standards.
The biology of Calacarus australis involves a short life cycle consisting of egg, larva, nymph, and adult stages. Favorable environmental conditions, such as moderate to high temperatures, accelerate its reproductive rate. Because they are wingless, their spread is primarily through wind, rain, or contaminated tools and clothing used during harvesting.
The damage caused by these mites is characterized by bronzing or browning of the leaves. As the mites feed, the leaves become brittle, dry, and lose their vibrant color. This injury stunts plant growth and significantly reduces the total output of marketable tea leaves, as the photosynthetic capacity of the plant is severely impaired.
