Description

Systematic position. The purple tea mite (Calacarus carinatus) is a microscopic member of the Eriophyidae family within the Acariformes order. These mites are known for their significant impact on tea cultivation globally, specifically affecting the growth and commercial value of the tea plant.

Crops and economic importance. The primary host plant is Camellia sinensis. Calacarus carinatus infestations cause substantial economic losses in tea-growing regions by damaging the young flush, which is the specific part used for tea production. Heavy infestations drastically reduce the overall yield and lower the quality of processed tea leaves.

Biology and life cycle. The mite undergoes several life stages including eggs, nymphs, and adults. It is characterized by a rapid reproductive cycle, allowing populations to escalate quickly under favorable climatic conditions. During cold seasons, they seek refuge in bark crevices or dormant buds, emerging as temperatures rise to infest new foliage.

Damage symptoms. The presence of the pest is marked by the development of a dark purple or reddish-brown discoloration on the lower surface of the tea leaves. As the mites feed, the leaves become brittle, undergo curling, and exhibit stunted growth. These symptoms are clear indicators of cellular damage caused by the mites’ specialized piercing-sucking mouthparts.

Control measures. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling Calacarus carinatus. Key strategies involve:

  • Maintaining plant vigor through balanced fertilization and proper pruning.
  • Improving air circulation within the canopy to create unfavorable conditions for mite propagation.
  • Judicious use of acaricides when economic thresholds are reached, ensuring compliance with harvest intervals.
  • Encouraging natural predators such as predatory mites to maintain biological balance.

Consistent monitoring and the implementation of cultural practices are critical for reducing reliance on chemical pesticides and ensuring the long-term sustainability of tea production.
