Description

The Citrus pink mite (Calacarus citrifolii) is a microscopic member of the Eriophyidae family. It is a highly specialized agricultural pest that affects various citrus species, thriving primarily in warm, humid climates where it can exert significant pressure on commercial citrus production.

The host range of this mite is focused on citrus varieties, including lemons, oranges, and grapefruit. The mites primarily colonize the tender young leaves and developing fruit. By piercing the epidermal cells and consuming the contents, they cause localized damage that can escalate into a major infestation across the entire canopy.

The life cycle of C. citrifolii consists of the egg, nymph, and adult stages. Because these mites are extremely small, their development is often unnoticed until physical damage becomes apparent. Their reproduction rate is highly dependent on environmental conditions, with warm weather acting as a catalyst for rapid population expansion throughout the growing season.

The primary symptom of infestation is the development of a characteristic reddish or bronze-colored discoloration on the fruit skin, known as "russeting." This damage significantly degrades fruit quality, reduces its market value, and can cause dehydration of the rind, stunted growth, and in severe cases, premature fruit abscission.
