Wheat stem borer

The wheat stem borer (Calamobius filum) is a beetle belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Cerambycidae. Unlike the common hymenopteran stem sawflies, this species is a longhorn beetle. Its larvae are specialized internal feeders that reside within the hollow stems of various grass species, making them hidden threats to cereal crops.

The pest primarily targets small grain cereals. Common wheat, durum wheat, rye, barley, and oats are highly susceptible to infestation. The pest also thrives on wild grass species found along field margins, which serve as natural reservoirs that maintain the population pressure throughout the growing season.

The biological life cycle of Calamobius filum consists of one generation per year. The larvae overwinter inside the stubble or the basal part of the plant stems left after harvest. In the spring, they pupate, and adult beetles emerge. The adult activity peak typically occurs during the booting and heading stages of the host crops, during which they mate and lay eggs.

Damage is caused by larvae tunneling through the stems, which disrupts vascular transport and prevents nutrients from reaching the ear. This leads to premature ripening, whiteheads, and significant kernel shriveling. Furthermore, the weakened stems are prone to lodging, causing severe harvesting challenges and potential yield losses of up to 30 percent or more in heavily infested fields.

Effective management and protection measures include the following strategies:

• Deep plowing immediately after harvest to bury and destroy larval overwintering sites in stubble.
• Implementing diversified crop rotations to disrupt the pest's reproductive cycle.
• Selecting cereal varieties with thicker stems that are less attractive or more resistant to larval tunneling.
• Applying targeted insecticides during the period of adult emergence before oviposition begins.
• Maintaining field hygiene by controlling wild grass weeds that host the pest population.
