Wheat stem borer

The wheat stem borer (Calamobius filum) is a significant agricultural pest belonging to the longhorn beetle family (Cerambycidae). These beetles are characterized by their slender, elongated bodies and antennae that are often longer than the body itself. They are typically dark-colored and covered in fine, dense pubescence, allowing them to blend in with the cereal crops they inhabit.

This pest primarily infests various small grain cereals, including wheat, barley, and rye. While it prefers cultivated crops, it can also survive on wild grasses, which often serve as primary sources of infestation for neighboring agricultural fields. The species is particularly problematic in regions with warm, semi-arid climates where cereal production is intensive.

The lifecycle of Calamobius filum is univoltine, meaning there is only one generation per year. The larvae overwinter within the stubble of harvested cereal crops. During the spring, they undergo pupation, and the adult beetles emerge in late May or June. Mating occurs shortly after emergence, and females lay eggs individually in the stems of host plants.

The damage is caused primarily by the larvae, which tunnel through the interior of the stem. By feeding on the internal tissues, they disrupt the plant's nutrient and water transport system. This causes the grain heads to turn white prematurely, resulting in thin, shriveled grains or, in severe cases, the complete loss of the ear. The weakened stems often collapse, complicating mechanical harvesting and leading to significant economic losses.
