The Calepitrimerus russoi, commonly referred to as the olive rust mite, is a member of the Eriophyidae family within the Trombidiformes order. It is a highly specialized mite that primarily targets olive trees, acting as a significant pest in both traditional and intensive olive production systems.

The host plant for this mite is exclusively the olive tree (Olea europaea). These mites prefer soft, young tissues such as budding leaves, new shoots, and developing fruits, where they feed by piercing the surface cells and extracting the vital fluids, which stunts the development of the plant tissue.

The life cycle of the olive rust mite is fast-paced, allowing the population to reach damaging levels rapidly during the growing season. They overwinter in protected areas on the tree, typically within dormant buds or bark crevices, and emerge as soon as temperatures permit, beginning their cycle of feeding and reproduction.
