Description
The Thuja rust mite (Calepitrimerus thujae) is a microscopic member of the Eriophyidae family. Unlike spider mites, these pests are extremely small and worm-like, possessing only two pairs of legs, which makes them invisible to the naked eye. They are highly specialized pests that thrive specifically on coniferous hosts.
The primary host for this mite is the Thuja species (Arborvitae). These mites infest the scale-like leaves of the plant. By piercing the plant cells and feeding on their contents, they disrupt the normal physiology of the host plant, leading to significant stress and aesthetic damage.
The biological cycle of the Thuja rust mite is closely tied to seasonal temperatures. They overwinter as adult females under the scales of the foliage. In spring, as temperatures rise, they emerge and begin to lay eggs on the newly developing shoots.
