Description

The Cypress bark borer (Callidiellum cupressi) is a wood-boring beetle belonging to the family Cerambycidae. This pest is a serious threat to various ornamental and forest conifers, often causing significant decline in plant health when populations are left unchecked.

The primary host plants for this insect are members of the Cupressaceae family. Cypress, juniper, arborvitae (thuja), and false cypress are the most commonly targeted species. Healthy trees are generally more resistant, but those under stress from drought or improper environmental conditions are highly susceptible to infestation.

The life cycle of this beetle is typically completed in one year. Adult beetles emerge in the spring to mate and lay eggs within crevices in the bark. Upon hatching, the larvae bore into the tree, creating feeding galleries within the inner bark and cambium layers. This feeding activity disrupts the flow of water and nutrients, severely weakening the tree.

Visible signs of infestation include tiny exit holes in the bark, patches of discolored or wilting needles, and fine, sawdust-like frass accumulating near the base of the tree or on the branches. Left untreated, the continuous tunneling can girdle the tree, ultimately leading to death or severe canopy thinning.

Integrated pest management is essential for controlling this beetle. Key strategies include:

  • Maintaining tree vigor through proper irrigation and fertilization;
  • Pruning and destroying infested branches or removing severely damaged trees;
  • Applying preventive insecticide sprays during the adult beetle's flight period;
  • Monitoring nursery stock for signs of larval tunneling to prevent spread.
