Japanese cedar longhorned beetle

The Japanese cedar longhorned beetle (Callidiellum rufipenne) is a significant invasive wood-boring pest belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Cerambycidae. Originally native to East Asia, this beetle has been introduced into Europe and North America through the global timber trade, where it poses a severe threat to various coniferous trees, particularly those in landscapes and nurseries.

This pest primarily infests trees within the Cupressaceae family. The most susceptible host species include junipers (Juniperus), arborvitae (Thuja), false cypresses (Chamaecyparis), and Japanese cedars (Cryptomeria). While the beetle often targets weakened or stressed trees, heavy infestations can compromise the health of otherwise vigorous specimens, leading to widespread damage in ornamental plantings.

The biology of the species typically involves a one-year life cycle. Adult beetles emerge in the spring to mate and lay eggs within bark crevices or under cone scales. Upon hatching, larvae bore into the phloem and cambium layer, creating erratic galleries that disrupt nutrient flow. By late summer or autumn, larvae pupate within the sapwood, remaining there as adults until they emerge the following spring.

• Symptoms include small, oval exit holes on the bark surface.
• Accumulation of frass (fine wood shavings) at the base of the trunk.
• Yellowing and browning of needles on affected branches.
• Dieback of the canopy and eventual tree mortality.

Effective management requires strict adherence to phytosanitary regulations to prevent the transport of infested firewood or nursery stock. Silvicultural practices, such as maintaining tree vigor through proper irrigation and fertilization, can reduce susceptibility. When an infestation is confirmed, affected trees should be removed and destroyed before the adult flight period. Periodic trunk sprays with systemic insecticides may provide protection during peak activity months.
