Systematic position: The genus Callidium belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Cerambycidae, commonly known as longhorn beetles. These insects are classified as xylophages, meaning their life cycle is strictly dependent on woody tissues throughout their larval development stage.
Host plants: The primary targets for this genus are coniferous tree species, particularly spruce, fir, and occasionally pine and larch. The pest shows a preference for weakened, freshly cut, or damaged trees, and can also colonize timber in structures if it retains sufficient moisture and bark cover.
Biology and life cycle: The life cycle progresses through four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Adult beetles are active during the spring and summer. Females lay eggs within bark crevices. Upon hatching, the larvae penetrate beneath the bark, where they carve winding tunnels, gradually boring deeper into the sapwood. By creating broad, flattened tunnels under the bark, they disrupt the cambium and phloem, which leads to the decline and eventual death of the tree. The economic impact includes both the mortality of living forest stands and the significant degradation of timber quality due to larval galleries.
Control measures: Management of the Callidium beetle focuses on forestry practices. Key strategies include:
- timely sanitary felling of infested and stressed trees;
- thorough cleaning of logging sites and prompt transport of timber before the adult flight season;
- deployment of pheromone traps for population monitoring and adult suppression;
