Spruce flat beetle

Callidium aeneum

Description

Systematic position of the Callidium aeneum falls under the order Coleoptera and the family Cerambycidae (longhorn beetles). As a wood-boring insect, this species plays a specific role in forest ecology by primarily targeting the cambium and xylem layers of coniferous tree trunks during its larval development.

The beetle specifically infests various coniferous cultures, showing a strong preference for spruce, fir, and pine. It primarily attacks trees that are already stressed or weakened by environmental factors, including drought, defoliation, or mechanical damage, and is frequently found in fresh logs left in the forest.

The biology and life cycle of this pest are highly synchronized with the vegetation period. Adult beetles emerge in late spring or summer. Females deposit eggs into bark crevices. The larvae bore into the bark, feeding on the inner bark and cambium, creating extensive galleries that eventually disrupt the tree's vital transport tissues.

The nature of damage and harmfulness caused by this beetle is significant. Larval activity under the bark leads to weakened tree vitality and eventually tree mortality in cases of severe infestation. Furthermore, the boreholes created by emerging adults allow for the entry of secondary wood-decay fungi, significantly reducing the economic value of timber.

Control measures are mainly focused on forest hygiene and silvicultural management. To effectively manage populations, foresters implement the following:

  • Removal and destruction of infested trees before the next generation of beetles emerges.
  • Rapid transport of harvested timber out of forests to prevent colonization.
  • Utilization of trap logs to attract and collect the insects.
  • Maintaining high stand vigor through proper thinning and site management.
