Callidium coriaceum

Callidium coriaceum is a species of longhorn beetle belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Cerambycidae. This insect is classified as a significant wood-boring pest, primarily targeting coniferous trees. It is known for its cryptic lifestyle, spending most of its life cycle developing beneath the bark and within the wood of its host.

The primary host plants include various coniferous species, particularly spruce (Picea) and fir (Abies). This beetle predominantly attacks stressed, dying, or recently felled trees. It poses a significant threat to forest health as well as to the timber industry, where stored logs that are not properly treated become prime targets for infestation.

The biological cycle of the beetle is synchronized with the season. Adults emerge in spring or summer, mating and laying eggs in bark crevices. Upon hatching, the larvae burrow beneath the bark, feeding on the phloem and cambium layers. This larval stage is the most destructive, as they create extensive galleries that disrupt the vascular flow of the host tree.

The damage caused by Callidium coriaceum is characterized by flattened, winding tunnels filled with frass (wood dust). This activity leads to the rapid decline of the tree's physiological condition and significantly reduces the value of the timber. In cases of high infestation levels, the structural integrity of the wood is compromised, making it unsuitable for commercial use.

Control strategies for this pest revolve around silvicultural practices and sanitation. Key methods include the rapid removal of infested wood from the forest to prevent the spread of the population and the maintenance of forest hygiene. In timber yards, debarking logs, ensuring proper storage conditions, and utilizing approved chemical treatments are necessary to prevent and manage outbreaks.
