The red-winged longhorn beetle (Callidium rufipenne) is a notable technical wood pest classified within the order Coleoptera and the family Cerambycidae. This species is native to East Asia and is recognized as a primary threat to conifer forests, causing substantial damage to both standing trees and harvested timber stocks in affected regions.
This beetle primarily attacks coniferous trees, including spruce (Picea), fir (Abies), and cedar species. It demonstrates a strong preference for weakened or dying trees, as well as fresh logs left in forest yards. By colonizing these materials, the beetle acts as a secondary agent that accelerates the deterioration of the timber quality.
The biological development of this pest is centered on its larval stage, which resides under the bark. Adult beetles emerge in spring and summer to mate and oviposit into bark crevices. The larvae bore into the phloem and cambium before tunneling deeper into the sapwood, completing their life cycle over the course of one year depending on environmental temperature and humidity.
The damage caused by the larvae is characterized by intricate gallery systems filled with dense wood dust. This tunneling effectively cuts off the nutrient transport channels in the tree, often leading to rapid decline. In terms of economic impact, the presence of these galleries degrades the structural integrity and aesthetic value of logs, making the wood unsuitable for high-grade construction purposes.
