Blood-red longhorn beetle
Callidium sanguineum
Description
The blood-red longhorn beetle (Latin name Callidium sanguineum) is a member of the Cerambycidae family, belonging to the order Coleoptera. This beetle is recognized as a significant wood-boring pest in various forest ecosystems across Europe and parts of Asia. It is easily identifiable by its bright, blood-red elytra, which contrasts sharply with its darker body parts.
This pest primarily attacks various deciduous trees, with a strong preference for oak, beech, hornbeam, and willow. The beetles generally target weakened, stressed, or recently felled trees. While they often occupy dead or dying timber, under favorable ecological conditions, they can infest living trees, particularly those suffering from drought or fungal diseases.
The biological cycle of the species usually spans one to two years. Adults emerge in the late spring or early summer to mate. Females lay their eggs in bark crevices, and upon hatching, the larvae immediately bore into the bark, settling in the cambium layer. They excavate extensive galleries beneath the bark, which significantly impacts the host tree's physiological health.
The damage caused by Callidium sanguineum is twofold: physiological and technical. The larvae's tunneling disrupts the transport of nutrients and water, which can lead to the rapid decline and death of host trees. Furthermore, the larval galleries render the affected timber aesthetically and structurally compromised, making it unsuitable for high-quality lumber and furniture production.
Effective management strategies require an integrated approach to silviculture and wood handling. Essential control practices include:
- Removing and destroying infested timber immediately to break the breeding cycle.
- Maintaining forest hygiene by clearing debris and slash piles where beetles commonly reproduce.
- Applying sanitary logging techniques to thin out overly stressed or damaged stands.
- Monitoring flight activity using traps to determine the best timing for preventive interventions.
- Ensuring that harvested timber is debarked or processed promptly to prevent infestation.
