Calliostoma is a genus of marine gastropod mollusks belonging to the family Calliostomatidae (order Trochida). While they are primarily known to marine biologists, they can act as significant pests in various aquaculture systems, particularly where seaweed or specialized aquatic flora are farmed.
These mollusks are typically found on rocky or silty sea floors. Their diet consists of microalgae, detritus, and sometimes the tender tissues of marine plants. When these habitats coincide with cultivated areas, the mollusks can cause significant damage to the commercial stock.
The biology of Calliostoma involves a pelagic larval stage followed by a benthic adult phase. They possess a characteristic conical shell and a specialized rasping organ known as a radula, which they use to graze on surfaces. This feeding method makes them particularly dangerous to delicate aquatic plant tissues.
The economic harm caused by these pests includes reduced yield, damaged crop surfaces, and increased vulnerability of plants to opportunistic pathogens. Furthermore, their accumulation on aquaculture infrastructure can hinder water circulation and compromise the overall hygiene of the farming environment.
Control measures primarily involve physical removal through manual cleaning of structures and nets. Operators often implement mesh barriers to exclude larvae and monitor population densities closely. Integrated pest management in maritime settings also considers biological controls and the manipulation of environmental conditions to suppress mollusk activity.
