Description

The genus Gibbula belongs to the class Gastropoda and the family Trochidae. While primarily recognized as marine organisms, they can occasionally present challenges in coastal agriculture and controlled aquatic plant production environments where they interfere with crop development.

These mollusks are known to damage coastal and salt-tolerant crops. Their presence is particularly noted in hydroponic setups or saline soils located near the coastline. They feed by scraping the plant epidermis with their radula, which can hinder the plant's ability to undergo standard physiological processes.

The biology of Gibbula is deeply tied to marine cycles. They undergo a larval stage known as a veliger, which is free-swimming. Once they settle, they transition to a sedentary or crawling lifestyle. Their population density often fluctuates based on water temperature, salinity, and the availability of biofilm or plant matter for sustenance.

The damage caused is primarily cosmetic and physiological. Feeding scars on the foliage and stems lead to reduced plant vigor. Furthermore, the lesions created by these snails provide entry points for secondary bacterial or fungal infections, which can result in significant decay if left unmanaged.

Effective management strategies include:

  • Physical barriers such as copper tape, which creates a negative reaction in mollusks.
  • Manual removal during early morning or evening hours when snails are most active.
  • Maintenance of proper irrigation and drainage to eliminate damp hiding spots.
  • Targeted application of mollusks-safe repellents in areas where environmental regulations allow.
