Systematic position: The blue bottle fly, scientifically known as Calliphora vicina (formerly associated with the name Calliphora phormia), is a member of the order Diptera and the family Calliphoridae. These flies are recognized worldwide as significant synanthropic insects that thrive in environments modified by human activity.

Affected substrates: Although they do not damage crops in the field, they are major pests in food processing facilities, livestock farms, and storage warehouses. They primarily attack high-protein substances, including meat, fish, offal, and organic waste, causing severe economic losses in the food industry.

Biology and life cycle: The lifecycle of the blue bottle fly consists of the egg, larval (three instars), pupal, and adult stages. Females lay clusters of eggs on suitable food sources. The development rate is highly dependent on ambient temperature, and under optimal conditions, the transition from egg to adult occurs within a few weeks, allowing for multiple generations per year.

Nature of damage and pest status: Larvae cause rapid decomposition of affected organic matter by secreting proteolytic enzymes. This results in the complete loss of nutritional and commercial value of food products. Furthermore, these flies serve as vectors for various bacteria and pathogens, posing a significant public health risk in food production environments.

Effective management requires strict adherence to hygiene and structural protection:

  • Implementing rigorous sanitation protocols to remove larval food sources.
