Callipogon

Callipogon is a genus of large longhorn beetles (Cerambycidae) belonging to the Prioninae subfamily. These insects are well-known wood-boring pests whose larvae develop inside the wood of weakened or dying trees. While they play a functional ecological role in nature, their presence can be highly destructive in managed forests and plantations.

The beetle primarily targets broad-leaved tree species, including oak, beech, alder, and chestnut. Larvae develop within the thick trunks and large branches of host trees, creating extensive galleries deep inside the wood. This boring activity disrupts sap flow, severely weakens the tree, and often leads to its death during periods of high infestation.

The life cycle of Callipogon consists of the egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. Females lay eggs in bark crevices or wounds on the tree surface. The larvae feed on the internal wood tissue for several years, gradually boring deeper toward the core, which makes them protected from many traditional surface-based control methods.

The most visible signs of infestation include large entry and exit holes on the bark and piles of frass (boring dust) at the base of the tree. The economic impact is significant, as the destruction of the wood structure lowers the quality of the timber and exposes the tree to secondary infections, such as fungal pathogens, which accelerate decay.

Management and protection strategies require a multi-faceted approach:

• Implementation of sanitary logging and regular removal of deadwood.
• Use of pheromone traps for monitoring adult population density.
• Application of systemic or contact insecticides on infested tree surfaces during the flight period.
• Promoting overall stand vigor through sustainable forest management practices.
