Relic longhorn beetle

The relic longhorn beetle (Callipogon relictus) is a significant insect species from the Cerambycidae family, order Coleoptera. Known as one of the largest beetles in the world, it is a true relic of the Tertiary period. While often protected by conservation laws due to its rare status, in certain silvicultural contexts, it can be viewed as an agent that affects the structural integrity of mature or decaying trees.

This species primarily targets broad-leaved trees such as Mongolian oak, Amur linden, Manchurian ash, and elm. It typically prefers trees that are already suffering from physiological stress, old age, or environmental damage. By colonizing these trees, the beetle acts as a decomposer, although this activity can impact the economic value of timber in managed forest stands.

The life cycle of the relic longhorn beetle is notably extended, lasting approximately 4 to 6 years. Adult females deposit eggs into the crevices of the bark. Upon hatching, the larvae bore deep into the wood, creating extensive galleries. The larval stage is the primary period of growth, during which they consume significant amounts of woody tissue, preparing for pupation inside the tree trunk.

The damage caused by the larvae is characterized by large, oval-shaped exit holes on the surface of the trunk and complex internal tunnels filled with wood frass. This structural degradation weakens the tree, making it susceptible to snapping during wind events. Over time, heavy infestation leads to the death and fall of the host tree, altering the forest structure.

Effective management and protection strategies include:

• Proper disposal of timber residues to prevent population buildup.
• Monitoring forest health to identify early signs of colonization.
