Description
Callosamia is a genus of large moths belonging to the Saturniidae family, commonly known as silk moths. While these insects are often admired for their size and striking appearance, their larval stage (caterpillar) can occasionally act as a pest on various deciduous trees and ornamental woody plants in gardens and forestry.
The genus falls under the order Lepidoptera. The most well-known species, Callosamia promethea, thrives in temperate climates where host trees are abundant. Understanding their biological cycle is key to managing populations, as the species typically completes one generation per year, spending the winter in a silk cocoon attached to a host plant branch.
Host range is quite specific, with a preference for certain broad-leaved species. Larvae commonly feed on cherry, sassafras, lilac, maple, ash, and tulip trees. In residential landscapes, these larvae can cause significant foliage loss, particularly in younger trees that have less resilience to sustained defoliation.
The damage caused by Callosamia caterpillars is primarily characterized by the rapid consumption of leaf tissue. Young larvae often feed gregariously, creating visible clusters of skeletonized or completely consumed leaves. As they grow through their five instar stages, their food consumption increases exponentially, leading to severe branch defoliation if left unchecked.
Integrated pest management (IPM) for Callosamia involves several proactive steps to minimize tree damage. Cultural practices, such as manually removing and destroying winter cocoons found on bare branches, are highly effective. For larger outbreaks, applying biological insecticides such as Bacillus thuringiensis during the early larval stages helps control populations without harming beneficial pollinators or predatory insects.
