Callosamia angulifera
Callosamia angulifera
Description
Callosamia angulifera, commonly known as the tulip-tree silkmoth, is a species of moth in the family Saturniidae. While it is primarily a subject of interest for naturalists, it functions as a foliage-consuming organism that can affect specific host trees. Understanding its biology is essential for managing local populations in horticultural and arboricultural settings.
The primary host for this species is the tulip tree (Liriodendron tulipifera). The larvae are specialized feeders that rely on the foliage of these trees to complete their growth cycle. While their natural population density is typically low, they can occasionally cause localized defoliation in nurseries or isolated ornamental plantings where natural predators are scarce.
The life cycle of Callosamia angulifera consists of a single generation per year. The moths emerge in the spring to mate and lay eggs. The larvae progress through five instars, feeding throughout the summer months. Before the onset of winter, the final-instar larva spins a sturdy, leaf-wrapped cocoon that remains attached to the host tree, where it overwinters as a pupa.
Damage caused by this pest is characterized by severe leaf consumption. While early instars feed subtly, late-stage larvae are highly voracious and can consume entire leaves, including the margins and tissue between veins. Significant defoliation weakens the plant, potentially affecting its overall health, vigor, and aesthetic value, particularly in young or stressed trees.
Management of this moth is best achieved through integrated pest management (IPM) practices. The most effective method is physical removal: inspecting trees during the dormant season and manually destroying the cocoons found on the branches. In cases of significant infestation, biological control using Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) is recommended, as it effectively targets the larvae while minimizing impact on non-target species and the environment.
