Description

Calpodes ethlius, commonly known as the Canna leafroller, belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Hesperiidae. This moth is specialized in feeding on Canna lily species. The adult butterfly features brown wings with distinctive translucent spots, which helps it blend in with its environment while feeding on nectar.

The primary hosts for this pest are plants within the Cannaceae family, particularly the Canna lily. It is prevalent in tropical and subtropical regions, where it can complete multiple life cycles in a single year. The pest is particularly damaging to urban landscaping and private gardens where these ornamental plants are grown in large clusters.

The lifecycle consists of eggs, larvae, pupae, and adults. Female butterflies deposit eggs individually on the underside of leaves. The larvae go through five stages of development. As they grow, they exhibit the characteristic behavior of rolling the leaf margins and securing them with silk threads to create a protected shelter for feeding.

Damage is characterized by the presence of tightly rolled leaves, which turn brown and necrotic over time. As the larvae consume the leaf tissue, they cause significant defoliation, which hampers the plant's ability to produce energy through photosynthesis. Severe infestations often result in stunted growth and a complete loss of the plant's ornamental value.

Integrated pest management is essential for controlling this moth. Manual removal of the rolled leaves can be effective for small garden settings. For larger infestations, applying biological insecticides such as Bacillus thuringiensis or systemic chemical insecticides is recommended during the early larval stages before the caterpillars create significant leaf damage.
