Calyptraea chinensis, commonly known as the Chinese cup-and-saucer snail, is a marine gastropod mollusk within the family Calyptraeidae (order Littorinimorpha). While not a threat to traditional land crops, it is recognized as a significant pest in the shellfish aquaculture industry, particularly affecting oyster and mussel farming operations.

This species is an obligate filter-feeder that often establishes itself on the shells of other bivalves. By competing for food resources and physical space, these snails interfere with the physiological processes of the target species. This results in stunted growth and diminished health of the cultivated mollusks, directly impacting harvest yields.

The biology of Calyptraea chinensis is characterized by a planktonic larval stage which allows for rapid dispersal throughout coastal farming areas. Once the larvae settle, they undergo metamorphosis and typically spend the rest of their lives attached to a hard substrate. Their ability to survive in high-density environments makes them persistent colonizers.

Damage to the host occurs through mechanical obstruction and nutrient competition. By covering the exterior of an oyster or mussel shell, the snail hampers the host's ability to maintain optimal filtration and respiration rates.
