Atlantic slipper snail

The Atlantic slipper snail (Crepidula fornicata) is a marine gastropod mollusk belonging to the Calyptraeidae family. While not a direct pest of traditional terrestrial agriculture, it is a significant threat to marine agriculture (mariculture), specifically impacting the growth of seaweed and shellfish crops in invaded coastal regions.

Taxonomically, this species is classified under the order Littorinimorpha. Originally native to the North American Atlantic coast, it has successfully established itself as an invasive species in European waters. Its presence in new habitats often disrupts local ecological balances, creating challenging conditions for commercial marine farming operations.

The biological cycle of this mollusk is highly efficient. Individuals are protandrous hermaphrodites, forming large stacks or chains. This unique social structure allows for dense population growth and rapid reproductive success. Their planktonic larvae facilitate the spread of the species over large distances, making them difficult to contain once established in a new area.

The damage caused by these snails is primarily mechanical and competitive. They attach themselves in large numbers to the shells of oysters, mussels, and surfaces of macroalgae, effectively suffocating them. By occupying space and competing for suspended organic particles, they significantly reduce the yield and quality of cultured marine species, leading to substantial financial losses.

Control measures are essential for maintaining sustainable mariculture operations. Strategies include:

• Mechanical removal of snail clusters from equipment and harvestable stock.
• Regular cleaning and sterilization of aquaculture gear between sites.
• Biological monitoring to identify early colonization phases.
• Processing harvested snails into non-food agricultural products or fertilizers to offset removal costs.
