Wrinkled dune snail

The wrinkled dune snail (Candidula intersecta) is a land snail belonging to the Hygromiidae family. Recognized as a significant pest in agricultural and horticultural settings, this species is known for its resilience and ability to thrive in diverse environments, often causing substantial damage to both food crops and ornamental plants.

Classified under the order Stylommatophora, this mollusk is characterized by a small, calcified shell featuring prominent radial ridges. The shell typically measures between 8 and 12 mm in diameter. Its adaptive nature allows it to colonize various habitats, including grasslands, agricultural fields, and disturbed soil, where it can quickly become an invasive pest.

This snail poses a threat to a variety of vegetation. It is known to feed on leafy vegetables, cereal crops, and vines, often targeting young seedlings. By consuming foliage and stems, the snail causes physical damage that weakens plants, reduces yield, and leaves behind unsightly slime trails that render produce unsuitable for market sale.

The biology and lifecycle of Candidula intersecta are highly dependent on moisture levels. During the active season, snails mate and lay eggs in the soil. They are highly successful in surviving temporary droughts by entering a state of estivation, attaching themselves to stable surfaces to preserve moisture until conditions improve. This behavior makes it difficult to eradicate them completely from an infested area.
