Cochlicella is a genus of air-breathing land snails belonging to the family Geomitridae within the order Stylommatophora. These mollusks are recognized as significant agricultural pests in many parts of the world. Known for their distinct conical shells, they are highly resilient, enabling them to survive in various environments ranging from agricultural fields to semi-arid landscapes.

The pest displays a wide range of host plants, acting as a generalist herbivore. It infests a variety of crops including cereals, pulses, rapeseed, and diverse vegetable crops. In severe infestations, Cochlicella snails aggregate in large numbers on the stems and leaves of plants, causing substantial economic losses by making crops unmarketable due to their presence and the accumulation of slime and feces.

The biology and lifecycle of Cochlicella are heavily influenced by humidity and temperature patterns. They typically reproduce during cooler, moist seasons. When conditions become dry or excessively hot, the snails enter an estivation phase, often attaching themselves to crop stems or hiding in soil crevices. This ability to undergo dormancy allows them to survive adverse weather conditions and reappear rapidly when moisture levels return to an optimal state.

Damage is characterized by the rasping of leaf tissue and stems, which can stunt plant growth and reduce overall yields. Beyond physical consumption, these snails cause severe quality issues by contaminating produce with mucus and excreta, which serve as vectors for various plant pathogens. Young seedlings are particularly vulnerable, and their destruction can lead to significant thinning of crop stands.
