The white-tailed deer (Canis virginianus, scientifically referred to as Odocoileus virginianus) is recognized in agronomy as a significant vertebrate pest. Belonging to the order Artiodactyla and family Cervidae, this animal poses a major challenge to crop yield preservation due to its high adaptability and rapid population growth in agricultural landscapes.
Deer feed on a diverse range of crops, showing a strong preference for corn, soybeans, alfalfa, and winter wheat. Furthermore, they cause severe damage to commercial orchards by browsing on young branches, terminal buds, and stripping the bark from nursery trees during the winter months when food is scarce.
The biology of the species centers on its opportunistic foraging behavior. Deer are primarily crepuscular, often venturing into agricultural fields at dawn and dusk. Their reproductive cycle is seasonal, but their ability to exploit high-energy farm crops allows populations to maintain high density, putting constant pressure on nearby farmlands throughout the growing season.
Economic damage stems from both direct consumption and physical trampling. By browsing on growing points, deer stunt plant development and reduce potential yields significantly. In addition to lost biomass, damaged crops are often predisposed to secondary infections by pathogens entering through the wounds caused by the animal's teeth.
Effective management and protection of agricultural fields include several approaches:
- Construction of high-tensile woven wire fences to exclude deer from fields.
- Application of chemical repellent sprays to protect sensitive vegetative stages.
- Use of motion-activated ultrasonic devices or scare tactics to deter feeding.
- Implementing landscape management to reduce cover areas near vulnerable crop blocks.
