Capua

Capua (lat. Capua) is a genus of moths belonging to the family Tortricidae (leafrollers) within the order Lepidoptera. Recognized by agricultural professionals as a significant pest, this group includes various species known for their larvae's ability to cause localized but severe damage to foliage and fruit development in temperate climates.

The host range of Capua is quite extensive, primarily encompassing fruit trees such as apples, pears, cherries, and plums. However, these insects are also notorious for damaging various ornamental shrubs, forest trees, and occasionally small fruit crops. Their polyphagous nature allows them to thrive in diverse ecological conditions, making them a recurring challenge in orchard management.

The biological cycle consists of four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult moth. Overwintering typically occurs at the larval stage, often tucked into cocoons beneath the bark or within leaf debris. Upon the arrival of spring temperatures, the larvae emerge to feed on developing buds and young leaves. The life cycle can comprise one or more generations per year depending on the local climate.

Damage is characterized by the consumption of buds and leaves, often accompanied by the rolling of leaves secured with silk threads. This characteristic "leafrolling" protects the larvae from natural predators and contact insecticides. The resulting damage reduces the plant's photosynthetic capacity, impairs structural growth, and can significantly decrease fruit quality and commercial yield.

Integrated pest management (IPM) strategies for controlling Capua involve a combination of techniques:

• Regular monitoring of adult populations using pheromone traps.
• Sanitary pruning and removal of infested plant parts to reduce overwintering sites.
