Southern Marbled Skipper

The Southern Marbled Skipper (Carcharodus boeticus) is a butterfly species belonging to the family Hesperiidae (skippers). While primarily of interest to lepidopterists, in agricultural and horticultural settings, its larvae can act as minor pests on specific host plants, particularly within the Lamiaceae family.

The host range of this species primarily includes aromatic and medicinal plants such as Salvia (sage) and Stachys (woundwort). In gardens or commercial herb plantations, these plants can provide both the necessary nutrition for larval development and a secure environment for the pupal stage.

The biological development follows a typical holometabolous cycle: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females typically oviposit on the underside of host leaves. Upon hatching, the larvae construct shelters by folding or rolling leaves and binding them with silk, which protects them from predators and environmental stress while they feed on the leaf tissue.

The damage caused by the larvae is characterized by leaf defoliation and the presence of silk-bound leaf shelters. In cases of significant population density, the feeding activity of the caterpillars can compromise the aesthetic quality of ornamental plants or the harvestable biomass of herbs, leading to reduced productivity and economic loss.

Effective management and protection strategies for this pest include the following:

• Regular monitoring of host plants for the presence of rolled leaves or feeding signs.
• Manual removal and disposal of infested leaf clusters to reduce the local population.
