Lesser mealworm beetle

The Lesser mealworm beetle (Carcinops pumilio) is a member of the Histeridae family within the order Coleoptera. It is a small, dark-colored beetle widely recognized as a significant pest within poultry production facilities and other intensive livestock environments.

This beetle primarily dwells in poultry litter and manure. While it acts as a predator by feeding on fly larvae, its presence is considered highly problematic. The beetles are known to act as vectors for various poultry pathogens, including Salmonella species, E. coli, and avian influenza, posing a severe risk to farm biosecurity.

The biological cycle of Carcinops pumilio consists of egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. These beetles thrive in high-temperature and high-humidity conditions common in broiler houses. Adults are adept at crawling and flying, allowing them to rapidly colonize new environments if optimal conditions are available.

The damage caused by these beetles is twofold. Firstly, they destroy structural insulation materials by boring tunnels, which increases heating costs and compromises building integrity. Secondly, their high density can cause severe nuisance and indirect economic loss due to the high costs required for intensive sanitation protocols.

Effective management and control strategies are essential:

• implementing strict sanitary protocols between production flocks;
• thorough removal of manure and soiled bedding materials;
• application of residual insecticides during the empty house period;
• improving facility maintenance to seal gaps in walls and ceilings;
• regular monitoring of beetle populations using specialized sticky or pitfall traps.
