The oblong hister beetle (Latin Platysoma oblongum) belongs to the Histeridae family within the order Coleoptera. This insect is characterized by its small size and a flattened body structure, perfectly adapted for survival in the narrow spaces found beneath the bark of various trees. Unlike many other members of this family that are strictly predatory, the life history of this species is intricately linked to the ecology of woody plants.
The pest primarily targets weakened or damaged deciduous trees, including species such as birch, oak, and poplar. Both larvae and adults reside under the bark, where they tunnel into the tree, disrupting the integrity of the cambium and phloem layers.
