Sunn pest

The Sunn pest (latin Eurygaster integriceps) is one of the most destructive pests affecting cereal crops, particularly wheat and barley. It belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Scutelleridae. Known for its distinct shield-like shape, this insect causes significant economic losses globally by reducing both grain quantity and quality.

The pest primarily targets cereal crops, specifically winter and spring wheat, but can also infest barley, rye, and various wild grasses. The insects feed by piercing the plant tissues and injecting saliva containing enzymes that digest plant proteins, which is particularly devastating for the development of wheat kernels.

The life cycle of the Sunn pest involves migration between overwintering sites in woody areas or mountainous regions and cultivated fields. Adults emerge in early spring, migrate to cereal fields to feed, mate, and lay eggs. After the eggs hatch, the larvae undergo five developmental stages, growing into adults that eventually migrate back to hibernation sites in mid-summer.

The damage caused by the Sunn pest varies based on the growth stage of the plant. Early season feeding can cause stem death and whitehead symptoms, while feeding during the grain-filling stage results in shriveled kernels. The enzymes injected by the pest degrade the gluten content in wheat, making the resulting flour unsuitable for bread production.

Effective management requires an integrated approach to minimize population growth. Cultural practices such as crop rotation, maintaining field hygiene, and timely harvesting are crucial to reduce the availability of food sources for the pest. When populations exceed economic thresholds, the application of chemical insecticides targeting larvae is necessary to prevent severe yield loss.
