Description

Systematic position. The corn sap beetle (Carpophilus dimidiatus) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Nitidulidae. This insect is recognized as a significant pest of stored agricultural products and can cause substantial economic losses if environmental conditions in storage facilities are not strictly controlled.

Damaged crops. It is a polyphagous species that attacks a wide variety of commodities. Preferred substrates include maize (corn), wheat, rice, dried fruits, nuts, oilseeds, and various processed spices. In the field, it often infests fruits or crops that have already been damaged by birds, other insects, or fungal infections, making it a scavenger that evolves into a major storage threat.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of Carpophilus dimidiatus is highly influenced by temperature and relative humidity. Females lay eggs on suitable food sources, and larvae feed and develop rapidly in warm, moist environments. With optimal conditions (around 25–30 °C), the beetle can complete multiple generations in a single year, leading to exponential population growth within infested storage facilities.

Nature of damage and pest status. Both adults and larvae contribute to the destruction of products by consuming the internal parts of grains or fruit tissues. Damage goes beyond weight loss; the presence of larval waste, webbing, and frass makes the commodity unsuitable for market. Furthermore, these beetles act as vectors for various pathogens, including yeast and fungi, which can significantly lower the quality and safety of stored grains.

Control measures. Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for controlling this beetle. Key strategies include maintaining low moisture levels in stored grain (below 12-13%), which inhibits larval development. Regular sanitation of facilities, the removal of spillages, and the use of fumigants for infested batches are standard practices. Monitoring programs using specific attractant traps can help detect the presence of the beetle before widespread infestation occurs.
