Description
The Catastega aceriella, commonly known as the maple leaf-case moth, is a specialized insect belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Tortricidae. This moth species is primarily recognized for its unique larval behavior, which makes it a notable pest in maple-dominated forest stands and urban landscapes.
The primary host plants for this pest are maple species, including sugar maple and Norway maple. The larvae are highly dependent on the foliage of these trees, using the leaves not only for nutrition but also as raw material for constructing their protective cases throughout their developmental stages.
The life cycle of this insect consists of one generation per year. Larvae overwinter in small, cone-shaped cases attached to twigs or within leaf litter. In the spring, they emerge to feed on the developing buds and young leaves, gradually enlarging their cases as they grow larger and prepare for the pupal stage.
The primary damage symptom is the presence of distinctive, tapering cases made from leaf fragments and silk. Larvae feed by skeletonizing the leaf area surrounding their case attachment, which results in irregular holes and brownish patches on the foliage. In cases of severe infestation, the aesthetic value of the trees is significantly reduced.
Management strategies focus on sanitation and chemical intervention. Removing and disposing of infested leaf litter during autumn can reduce the overwintering population. In ornamental or nursery settings, applying systemic insecticides during the early stages of larval development in the spring is an effective method to prevent significant foliage loss.
