Description
The apple leaf mite (Cecidophyes malifoliae) is a microscopic member of the Eriophyidae family, commonly known as gall mites. Due to their extremely small size, these pests are invisible to the naked eye and are primarily identified by the specific physiological changes they induce in the host plant tissues.
This species is an obligate parasite of apple trees (Malus domestica). It restricts its activity to the leaves and developing buds of the host. Because of its host-specific nature, orchards, particularly those with younger trees, are the most susceptible to significant infestations that can impact vigor and health.
The life cycle of Cecidophyes malifoliae is synchronized with the phenology of the apple tree. Fertilized adult females overwinter in protected sites such as bark crevices or beneath bud scales. As spring temperatures rise, they migrate to the newly emerging foliage to initiate the first generation of the season, continuing to breed throughout the summer.
The primary symptom of infestation is the formation of galls—abnormal outgrowths on the leaf surface. Initially, these appear as small spots, which may eventually enlarge, discolor, or cause the leaf to curl and deform. Severe infestations significantly reduce the photosynthetic capacity of the tree, leading to stunted growth and potentially poor fruit set.
Management requires a strategic approach using specific acaricides. Control programs should focus on early spring applications, targeting the period when mites emerge from overwintering sites but before they are protected within fully developed galls. Maintaining orchard hygiene, including the removal of heavily infested plant material, is also a critical component of successful integrated pest management.
