Systematic position: Cecidophyes reticulatus is a species within the order Acariformes and the family Eriophyidae. These microscopic mites are well-known in horticulture for their extreme specialization, often targeting specific plant species or genera to survive and reproduce.

Host plants and damage: The primary host for this mite is the blackberry (Rubus fruticosus). The pest mainly targets the buds of the plant. By feeding on the meristematic tissues inside the buds, the mites cause distorted growth, stunted development, and the abortion of flower buds, leading to severe yield reductions.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle of Cecidophyes reticulatus is synchronized with the growth phases of its host. Fertilized females overwinter inside the bud scales. As temperatures rise in early spring, they emerge to feed on developing tissues and start a new generation. Multiple generations can occur in a single season, especially under favorable conditions.

Pest significance: The economic impact is substantial as the mites destroy potential fruit-bearing structures. Infested plants often exhibit reduced vigor and weakened canes. In severe cases, the entire floral structure of the bud is compromised, which significantly lowers the quality and quantity of the berry production in a commercial or home garden setting.

Pruning and destroying infested canes during the dormant season is a crucial step to reduce the overwintering population.
