Description
The currant bud mite (lat. Cecidophyopsis ribis) is a microscopic pest belonging to the family Eriophyidae. It is a significant threat to commercial and home-grown berry plantations, specifically targeting plants of the genus Ribes. Due to its size, it is often difficult to detect until substantial damage to the host plant has already occurred.
The primary host plants for this mite are blackcurrant bushes, although it can occasionally infest redcurrants, white currants, and gooseberries. It causes not only direct physical damage to the buds but also acts as the primary vector for the blackcurrant reversion virus, which can render entire plantations unproductive.
The biological cycle of the mite is closely synchronized with the phenology of the currant bush. The mites overwinter inside the infested buds. During the spring bud-burst period, the mites migrate from the old, infested buds to the newly formed ones. They reproduce rapidly throughout the summer, spreading through wind or by crawling onto new plant parts.
The characteristic damage is the formation of enlarged, spherical, or "cauliflower-like" buds. These infested buds fail to develop into normal shoots or flowers and eventually dry up. A heavy infestation leads to stunted growth, distorted foliage, and a dramatic drop in berry yield, effectively crippling the shrub's development.
Strategies for effective pest management include:
- Planting certified, mite-free, and virus-free nursery stock.
- Regular manual removal and burning of visibly infested, swollen buds before spring migration.
- Severe pruning or complete removal of heavily infested bushes to prevent the spread to healthy plants.
- Chemical control with acaricides, applied strictly during the peak migration window, usually coinciding with the flowering period of the bushes.
