Description
Systematic position: The hazelnut big bud mite, Cecidophyopsis vermiformis, belongs to the order Acariformes and the family Eriophyidae. These are microscopic, vermiform pests that are highly specialized, feeding exclusively on host plants within the Corylus genus, particularly hazel and filbert varieties.
Crops damaged: This mite primarily infests common hazel (Corylus avellana) and various cultivated commercial hazelnut varieties. In dense orchard conditions, the mite can rapidly spread, leading to significant economic losses for commercial growers who depend on stable yields.
Biology and life cycle: The mites overwinter as adults within the protective scales of dormant flower and vegetative buds. As temperatures rise in early spring, activity increases and egg-laying begins. Multiple generations occur throughout the growing season, with the migration period—when mites emerge from old buds to colonize new ones—being the most critical time for monitoring.
Damage and harmfulness: The feeding activity of these mites causes the buds to undergo hypertrophy, resulting in the formation of characteristic enlarged, rounded, or globose galls.
