Cecilioides

Cecilioides is a genus of air-breathing land snails belonging to the family Ferussaciidae. Often referred to as "blind snails" due to their subterranean lifestyle and lack of pigmentation, these mollusks live entirely within the soil profile. Their translucent shells and slender bodies allow them to navigate through porous soil substrates with ease.

These mollusks are primarily recognized as significant pests in greenhouse environments. They infest various vegetable crops, ornamentals, and seedling beds. Because they operate below the soil surface, their presence often goes unnoticed until the plants begin to show severe signs of stunted growth or systemic decline.

The biology of Cecilioides is governed by the need for high-moisture environments. They thrive in organic-rich, damp soils where they feed on root systems, germinating seeds, and decaying matter. Their reproductive cycle is favored by steady temperatures and high humidity, making greenhouses a permanent habitat where they can reproduce continuously.

The damage caused by these pests includes feeding lesions on roots, which disrupts water and nutrient uptake. This damage often leads to secondary infections by soil-borne pathogens, such as Pythium or Fusarium. Weakened plants exhibit yellowing leaves, overall wilting, and in severe cases, the complete collapse of the root system and plant death.

Effective control strategies focus on sanitation and environmental management. Growers should prioritize the use of sterilized potting mixes and implement strict water management to avoid oversaturating the soil. When infestations occur, the application of targeted molluscicides containing iron phosphate or metaldehyde, applied according to local safety regulations, is the recommended course of action.
