Cecilioides acicula, commonly known as the needle snail or blind snail, belongs to the family Ferussaciidae. This minute, blind, and subterranean mollusk is frequently overlooked due to its entirely underground lifestyle, rarely surfacing unless environmental conditions become unfavorable.
The snail primarily feeds on decaying organic matter within the soil profile. However, in agricultural and horticultural settings, high population densities lead to herbivory on live plant tissues. This includes grazing on root hairs, bulbs, tubers, and the delicate root systems of seedlings, significantly impacting plant vigor.
The biology of Cecilioides acicula is characterized by its slender, translucent, needle-shaped shell, which typically measures between 4 to 5 millimeters. These snails are hermaphroditic and can survive at considerable depths, migrating through existing soil channels made by earthworms or root penetration, allowing them to evade superficial soil treatments.
The economic damage caused by this pest is often indirect but severe. By feeding on roots, the snails create lesions that serve as entry points for soil-borne pathogens, including bacteria and fungi that cause vascular wilts and root rots. Infested crops often exhibit yellowing, stunting, and an inability to uptake nutrients properly, leading to potential yield reduction.
Effective management requires a combination of cultural and chemical strategies. Cultural controls include improving soil drainage and reducing the accumulation of decaying organic matter near plant bases. When infestation levels are high, targeted applications of molluscicides containing metaldehyde or ferric phosphate can be effective in reducing population numbers within the root zone.
